Future of Forklifts reimagined with Coventry University and Gravity Sketch VR
Coventry University Automotive and Transport Design students are reimagining the future of material handling with visionary next-generation forklift concepts.
Focused on the challenges and opportunities of smart warehouses in 2060, the project tasked students with creating autonomous or semi-autonomous counterbalance forklift solutions that push the boundaries of innovation, safety, and efficiency.
As part of the program, students explored a cutting-edge collaborative design workflow using the Gravity Sketch VR platform. Working in an immersive virtual environment enabled rapid ideation, real-time collaboration, and the development of highly refined concepts from the earliest stages of the design process.
The challenge was won by Alfie Lowe, whose forward-thinking autonomous forklift concept tackled one of the industry's most critical safety concerns: vehicle tip-overs. Leveraging an immersive VR design workflow, Alfie developed a self-driving forklift capable of dynamically adjusting its center of gravity to suit changing operating conditions, enhancing both stability and operator-free safety.
Recognized for its innovative approach and strong user-centered thinking, Alfie’s concept was selected for showcase at Milan Design Week 2026, highlighting the potential of virtual reality-driven design to shape the future of logistics and material handling.
